How important are golf lessons?

August 10, 2010, 6:00 pm - (1 year ago)
Hello all,

My first post and just wanna say how excited I am to start getting into this great game. IÂ've always had a low opinion about golf, up until I started playing it on the Wii about 6 months ago. That got me interested and I spent some time at my local sports authority, shooting in their back room.
I realized then how challenging the game is, unlike anything IÂ've ever played. After swinging and putting around for several days, I decided to get into it. I bought an inexpensive set, a bag of recycled balls and a putting hole for home. Watched MANY YouTube videos, read several articles and guides, and purchased (for half price) the Peak Performance Golf Swing (PPGS) guide. My grip, stance and posture are much improved since I started and IÂ'm feeling more comfortable with the club. IÂ'm still having difficulty with woods and irons.
IÂ'm trying to start off using the PPGS so that I donÂ't have to relearn it later. It makes the most sense to me. I have yet to spend actual time in the range, but I was wondering,
Are lessons essential for beginning golfers?

I live not to far from Chelsea Piers in NYC and they have a Golf Academy that has pretty good rates for beginner golfers. Since IÂ've been trying to pick up the PPGS, would I still need lessons even though some concepts and drills would run counter to PPGS?

Thanks all
