Regardless of whether you golf several times a year, weekly, or are on the PGA tour, we all end up in the rough from time to time. Understanding how longer grass affects the golf ball and knowing strategies to dislodging it is the key to beating the rough.

Fact 1: The Danger of Long Grass

Long grass is more dangerous than any other surface on a golf course for two reasons. First, it looks deceptively easy to play on and second, it is unpredictable. When a golfer looks at their golf ball in the rough they see an easy shot. This is a big mistake.

The Fix: To make good golf shots from the rough you must respect it abilities to ruin your golf swing and ball flight. Understanding that these things will happen and not trying to over work your golf swing or add unnecessary spin to the golf ball is a big step to playing well out of the rough.

Fact 2: Grass Spins Golf Balls

Long grass on a golf course is like a tangle of short string. As any object passes through them they are going to grab and hold on eventually being brushed aside. This action on the golf ball will cause it to spin. If you are attempting golf shots from the rough, do not attempt to spin it.

The Why: While golf balls shot out of the rough do spin in all various directions no golfer can say, Â'I meant to do that.Â" Trying to work against the grass results in more trouble than choosing a safe, short golf shot, every time. This oversight is why many a golfer ends up playing from rough to rough.

Fact 3: Less Grass = Cleaner Golf Shot

Do not despair golfers, there is hope. An adjustment in your golf swing will help you to reduce, if not eliminate, the effects that long grass has on your golf ball. LetÂ's have a look at the swing change now:

Mechanics: The concept a golfer should remember is to work at cutting the golf club down into the grass and making contact with the golf ball quickly. This will not only aid the golf ball in rising, it will also reduce the amount of long grass in between the golf club and golf ball.

Fact 4: Club Choice Matters

Another common error of many golfers is that they attempt to get too much distance while shooting through the rough. The result is a short, low golf shot that isnÂ't on target. Make sure you choose a golf club with a high loft to get the golf ball up quickly and reduce the effects of long grass.
